Understanding Breast Reduction, Or Reduction Mammoplasty

Breast reduction procedures, or reduction mammoplasty, reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, skin and glandular tissue. Breast reduction is usually performed on women with large breasts, which can cause problems ranging from social embarrassment and psychological issues, to physical effects such as back and neck strain. The breast reduction procedure may also be indicated for males suffering from a condition known as gynecomastia. As with all operations there may be some risks with the breast reduction operation, but problems are rare, and over 100,000 breast reduction procedures are carried out every year.

Breast reduction procedures are most often carried out on women with large, pendulous breasts. The woman may have had large breasts since adolescence, or they may have developed during pregnancy (gestational hypertrophy). Patients who are overweight may be required by the surgeon to lose a certain amount of weight before the breast reduction procedure is performed.

It is not uncommon for women who have undergone breast enlargement surgery to regret it and feel they have had breast augmentation that has been too big for them and choose to have a reduction.

Extremely large breasts can attract a considerable amount of attention, often unwanted. This includes unwanted attention from males, and may also include unpleasant and bitchy comments from other females. Young girls and women with large breasts may suffer a significant degree of insecurity and social embarrassment, and may develop psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression.

There are also physical problems associated with over large breasts. These include chronic head, neck and back-pain, and circulation and breathing difficulties. There can also be discomfort from brassiere straps rubbing and cutting into the skin. All these problems can be alleviated by a breast reduction operation.

Although large breasts can be a problem in adolescence, it is not normal to perform a breast reduction procedure until the girl’s breasts are fully developed. The breast reduction procedure normally requires a general anaesthetic. There are several techniques employed, the inferior pedicle technique is the most common, although the vertical scar technique is gaining in popularity. There is a liposuction only technique, but it is not suitable for those patients with the largest breast sizes.

The inferior pedicle technique is the most common type of breast reduction. An incision is made around the areole (the area of pigmented skin around the nipple), continuing downwards following the natural curve of the breast. After excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, the nipple and areole are moved to a new, higher position. The “inferior pedicle” refers to the point at which the blood and nerve connections to the nipple and areole complex (NAC) are attached to the chest wall.

The vertical scar technique for breast reduction is growing in popularity compared to the inferior pedicle, although it is best suited to patients requiring smaller breast reduction procedures. This technique has shorter scar length, it gives a better (more natural) breast shape, and is better at preserving the results over the long term.

There are risks with all operations, and breast reduction is no exception, although problems are rare. These can include difficulty in breast feeding, and altered sensation (erogenous function). The scars from the breast reduction operation are permanent, although the surgeon should be able to make them inconspicuous. They will eventually subside into thin, slightly discolored lines. It will take a few weeks to recover from the operation, and some women experience discomfort during their first menstrual period after the breast reduction procedure.

Business owners are understandably reluctant to spend large amounts of money on computer upgrades for their offices. After all, if the equipment they’ve got now is working, many business owners ask, then why do they need an upgrade?

The fact is that older computer systems probably aren’t working as well as the person signing the checks would like to believe. But the good new for business owners is that upgrading their computer software is a process that can offer a positive return on investment (ROI).

For example, let’s say that you want to upgrade to Windows 8 on your company computers. Besides the cost of the actual software, you’ll also have the expense of training your employees to learn Windows 8. So what’s the benefit to your business?

The fact is that when it comes to your business, time is indeed money. If your workers are using out of date software that isn’t getting the job done, they’re not as productive as they should be. New software can help increase productivity and your company’s profits along with it.

And don’t worry about training costs. There are plenty of affordable Windows 8 tutorial videos and online training courses that fit any budget.
